Knock Sensor Replacement Procedure for Kia Rio/Hyundai Accent

Steps to Replace a Knock Sensor on a 2006-2011 1.6L Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent

  1. Locate the knock sensor, which is located under the intake manifold on the back side of the engine: Watch

  2. Using a 10mm socket, remove the connector bracket bolt and then unplug the knock sensor connector: Watch

  3. With a 12mm socket, remove the knock sensor mounting bolt from the engine block and remove the knock sensor: Watch

  4. While holding the sensor connector in your hand, use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the metal bracket from the old sensor: Watch


    Tip : If bracket has excessive rust build up, it may be easier to break the old connector for bracket removal
  5. If the bracket is rusty, clean the mounting tab with a file or emery cloth, this will ease the installation of the bracket onto the new sensor

  6. Attach the original mounting bracket on the new sensor: Watch

  7. Insert the mounting bolt into the new knock sensor and thread it into the engine block by hand: Watch

  8. Using a torque wrench and a 12mm socket, torque sensor to 12-19 ft lbs: Watch


    Tip : Knock sensor mounting bolt torque is critical, overtightening can cause damage to the sensor
  9. With a 10mm socket re-install the bracket to the timing cover and plug in the sensor: Watch
