This bulletin will explain the internal operation of this switch for correct adjustment
Technical Services receives many contacts from customers asking about the lever on the back of this brake light switch. If the lever is moved prior to the brake light switch installation into the vehicle the switch will become unusable. The internals of the switch are a pinned style design. When the lever is turned it releases the pin allowing the center shaft of the switch to release, moving the internal mechanism into the final position. Rotating the arm will self-adjust and align the switch allowing the brake lights to activate when the brake pedal is depressed by the driver. The switch cannot be reused following a lever movement before installation. The image below shows the before and after lever rotation and the spring extending pushing against the center shaft.
- Note: The images show this switch taken apart for visual and training purposes only and should never be disassembled in the attempt to reuse.
The left image shows the correct position of the lever and plunger before installation while the right is how the lever and plunger will appear after installation and rotating the lever to activate/adjust the switch. Always verify the brake lights are functioning properly before driving.
