# Read the diagram before the vehicle

Turn a busy diagram into a story you can explain: what does the work, what controls it, and what changes when it is commanded on.

Source-linked lesson candidate. Technician review pending.

## The GoTech way of thinking
1. Define the question: What are we actually trying to establish?
2. Map the system — primary focus: What components, circuits, networks or relationships matter?
3. Observation ≠ conclusion: What did we actually observe, and what are we inferring?
4. Find the evidence boundary: What does this measurement, source or test establish, and what remains unknown?
5. Choose the next check: What additional evidence would reduce uncertainty the most? Choose a check that helps distinguish the remaining explanations.
6. Stop where the evidence stops: Do not turn a plausible explanation into a confirmed fact.

## This lesson’s focus
Build the circuit model before interpreting symptoms or measurements. Identify the load, its paths and the state the diagram represents.

## By the end
- Separate the load path from the control path in the horn example.
- Explain what a teaching color tells you—and what it does not.
- State the question a measurement would need to answer before choosing a tool.

## GoTech Tips

Core GoTech Tip: Name the job before choosing a test.
In the horn diagram, trace what does the work and what controls it.

GoTech Tip: Read the state, not the teaching color.
The overlay identifies a role; the depicted switch state still matters.

## Start with the question
You have a horn diagram and a horn that does not work. Before choosing a meter point, can you explain how the drawing says the horn should operate? Keep your answer in mind as you study the example.

## Start with the job, then find the load
In the instructor's 2008 Impala example, the horns do the work. The relay and its control circuit help determine when they receive power. Naming those roles gives you a starting point before you follow every line on the page.

Pause and explain: Pause and name the load, the switching device and the command path in the instructor's drawing.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3FsEV49CvM&t=285s (04:45–07:40)

## Read a state, not just a set of lines
The presenter introduces rest-state conventions as rules of thumb, then traces how a command changes the relay-controlled horn circuit. The useful comparison is between the state drawn and the state being explained. A convention is a starting assumption to check against the actual diagram legend.

Pause and explain: Which part of the explanation changes when the horn is commanded, and which connections remain the same?

## The overlay is a teaching aid
The added colors classify roles such as constant power and switched ground. They are not the vehicle's physical wire colors. The next lesson also qualifies the overlay: a switched-ground label is not a promise of a particular meter reading in every switch state.

Pause and explain: When you see a colored line, ask whether you are reading an annotation, a physical wire identification or an actual measurement.

## A partial box can leave part of the story elsewhere
The instructor calls attention to partial component outlines, splices and an option-dependent branch. Those details explain why the visible sheet is not always the whole component or every vehicle configuration. Follow the relevant reference and equipment context before treating a branch as part of your example.

Why it matters: You can trace a line correctly and still explain the wrong configuration.

Pause and explain: Identify one place where the source drawing sends you beyond the immediate load-and-switch picture.

## Go deeper

Attach a reading to its conditions
When studying a source reading, record its system/branch, test point and measurement reference, operating state and connection state. Mark any missing condition unknown before comparing it with an expected result.

Keep the drawing and the inference separate
Use three labels in your notes: given in the source, inferred by the presenter, and still unknown. Leave missing details open.

## Explain the Impala horn example without reaching for a tool
Question: How does the command lead to the horns receiving power in this example?
Evidence in the lesson: The instructor identifies the horns, relay and control components, then follows the relevant connections and option branch.
Reasoning: Distinguish the path doing the work from the path controlling the relay. Explain the change in state before proposing a measurement.
Where it stops: This is a diagram explanation. The source does not supply a failed customer horn, a performed diagnostic test or a verified repair.

## Check your reasoning

An overlay labels a path switched ground. What can you conclude from that label alone?
A. It identifies the physical conductor well enough to select a connector terminal.
B. It identifies a teaching role; the state and circuit still determine the reading.
C. It gives the expected voltage without needing to identify the switch state.
Explanation: Yes. This preserves the distinction between the annotation and electrical behavior. Lesson 2 develops it further.

A new training drawing shows an unnamed load, its supply and return, and a separate control path. No symptom or measurement is supplied. Which note best prepares you to choose a useful check?
A. Map the load’s job, supply, return and control, including the state shown and what remains unspecified.
B. Start at the load because every other part of the drawing ultimately serves it.
C. Start with the control path because it determines when the load should operate.
Explanation: Yes. Build the relationship model first. An unlabeled example still lets you distinguish roles without inventing a fault or a vehicle test.

What outcome does this source actually establish?
A. A prediction about the diagram that also confirms how the physical vehicle is behaving.
B. A complete test plan once the supply and ground symbols have been located.
C. An explanation of the example circuit and how to prepare a useful test question.
Explanation: Yes. That is valuable learning without turning a drawing exercise into repair evidence.

## Explain it in your own words
In three sentences, explain the load, the command path and one expected change in state in the source example. Name anything you would still need the diagram legend to confirm.

## Keep this
Locate the load. Explain its control. Name the state. Then decide what question a test should answer.

## Apply the way of thinking
Use the evidence worksheet to describe a source diagram: the load, the relevant paths, the shown state and the question still open. Ask GoTech about the reviewed diagram concepts; it does not identify a fault on your vehicle.
